Library

In the days of Alexandria, the Great Library was where thousands of scrolls of information were held. There anyone who wanted answers would go to a librarian and ask a question. The librarian would find documents and give answers. Many scrolls were collected, even by copying originals (though some say the originals were kept and the kind Greek who gave the scroll would get a pretty similar copy). It was the first library for the public and information was sent all over the Greek Empire through other libraries and librarians. It was destroyed after the Great Fire of Alexandria, but none of the information was lost.

And now for the Frequently Asked Questions:

So, who’s your favorite Grecian God?

Definitely Hermes. He is the eloquent, mercantile (comes from Mercury, his roman counterpart) trickster. He is a messenger and a comic. I love Hermes and his planet (and being a Gemini, it is said that I have quite a few of his traits…ruled by his planet and all). In fact I love Hermes almost as much as I love Athena (I’m debating whom I like more, to be honest). The Norse God Loki (the chaotic yet beneficial sidekick to Thor) is my other favorite mythological figure.

Is logios an epithet of Athena’s?

Whee! Someone asked! Nope, Logios is one of Hermes’ and it means eloquent. Unfortunately I don’t like any other epithet’s of Athena’s (and Glaukopis is rather hard to pronounce, ne?) and Hermes has such good ones! Like Dolios (sneaky one), Erounios (bringer of luck) and others. I had to steal one of his. In a way this blog is a homage to both of these guys.

What’s a Moira?

The Moirae (singular: Moira) were the fates. If you’ve ever seen the movie Hercules (and didn’t throw up at the sight of Disney butchering Greek mythology) they’re the people with the strings of life. There are three of them. Clotho wove the strings of life on her spindle, Lachesis measured the string of life and Atropos was the cutter of the threads of life. They also played with your head. A lot.
